Former Passaic, New Jersey Mayor Alex Blanco has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in a bribery scheme in which he solicited more than $100,000 in bribes from developers in exchange for directing federal housing funds to them.
Blanco pleaded guilty in November to a single bribery charge. Prosecutors allege he used an unnamed intermediary to demand the bribes from two developers seeking to construct low-income housing developments as a condition of releasing $216,400 in Housing and Urban Development funds to them.
In addition to a prison sentence, Blanco must serve three years of supervised release, and was ordered to pay $110,000 in restitution. A podiatrist, Blanco has also lost his medical job with the Department of Veterans Affairs and his medical license is in jeopardy, according to NJ.com.
