Peru Prosecutors Seek Jail for President in Corruption Case

Officials in Peru have requested the arrest of former President Ollanta Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia on money laundering and conspiracy charges in connection with corruption at Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.

Prosecutors say a former Odebrecht chief testified that he illegally contributed $3 million to Humala’s 2011 presidential campaign.

Odebrecht has acknowledged paying more than $800 million in bribes to officials across Latin America in exchange for favorable business.

Another former Peruvian President, Alejandro Toledo, has also been ordered arrested on related charges. Toledo is currently in the U.S. fighting extradition.
